Stux Gallery is pleased to present the work of L.A. based Bulgarian born artist Iva Gueorguieva in her first solo appearance at Stux Gallery in New York. Iva’s paintings, filled with whimsical detail, combine otherworldly abstraction within an enticing and tumultuous pictorial space.
In these bold new works, the artist incorporates elements of landscape, figuration and pure abstraction to confer emotional and social qualities onto the surface of the canvas. The paintings act as maps of unrestricted interior dialogues, leading the viewer through a virtual “vortex,” with peaks of emotion adjacent to more lyrical landscape elements and loose gestural markings.
In the artist’s own words, "The large-scale works in this show are portraits of places and possible events; of places considered as events, and events as places. Just as a facial expression can be understood as a topography of an emotion, my paintings record the topography of social and physical realities and relationships. ”
There is a great deal of movement within these paintings as swirling “winds” wreak havoc upon unsuspecting figures that are seemingly unaware and unsure of their fate. Within the paintings Gueorguieva evokes the otherworldly alongside of the familiar - landscapes, suns, moons, cityscapes, abstract forms, and organic and surreal references of nature. The paintings evoke a three dimensional space created by the artist's multiple overlapping of imagery and her more personal calligraphic markings.
